Here’s how to create one at home.

🎈 What You’ll Need

Before you start, gather everything together.

You’ll need:

• Balloons in your chosen colours
• A mixture of balloon sizes
• Balloon pump
• Balloon decorating strip
• Balloon glue dots
• Removable hooks suitable for your surface
• Scissors

🌈 Step 1: Choose Your Colour Palette

Before buying 100 balloons in 14 different colours, decide what look you’re trying to achieve.

Usually, a smaller colour palette creates a more cohesive result.

Try choosing around three or four colours that work with your party theme.

Choose colours inspired by your child’s favourite team.

📍 Step 2: Decide Where It’s Going BEFORE You Start

This is easily overlooked.

Before inflating anything, work out:

Where will the garland actually go?

Above the cake table?

Around a backdrop?

Along a wall?

Beside the sleepover setup?

Measure the approximate area so you know how long your garland needs to be.

Also plan how you’ll attach it.

Don’t wait until you’ve made a giant balloon garland to discover you have absolutely no idea how to get it onto the wall!

🎈 Step 3: Inflate Your Balloons

Now for the fun part.

Use your pump to inflate the balloons.

But here’s the trick:

Don’t make every balloon exactly the same size.

Different sizes give balloon garlands their full, layered appearance.

Use:

🔵 Larger balloons for structure
🟣 Medium balloons for the majority of the garland
🟡 Small balloons for filling gaps

You can even intentionally under-inflate some standard balloons to create smaller sizes.

Avoid over-inflating them until they’re stretched into a pear shape. A rounder balloon generally creates a softer-looking garland.

🎨 Step 4: Mix Your Colours as You Go

If you’re using a balloon decorating strip, insert the tied ends of your balloons into the holes along the strip.

Don’t put all the pink balloons together…

…then all the white…

…then all the purple.

Unless that’s deliberately the look you’re creating.

Instead, distribute your colours throughout the garland.

Occasionally take a step back and look at it from a distance.

If one section suddenly looks very pink or very dark, move things around before continuing.

📏 Step 5: Don’t Make It Too Perfect

This might sound strange, but balloon garlands often look better when they’re not completely symmetrical.

Mix your balloon sizes.

Create fuller areas.

Allow some smaller sections.

Have one side extend further than the other.

That slightly organic shape gives modern balloon garlands their beautiful, flowing appearance.

Don’t worry about every little gap yet.

Concentrate on building the main shape using your medium and larger balloons.

Continue until you’ve reached roughly the length you need.

Then hold it up in the space where you’re planning to display it.

You may decide:

“It needs another half metre.”

“Okay, that’s MUCH bigger than I expected.” 😂

It’s easier to make that discovery before adding all your finishing touches.

✨ Step 7: Fill the Gaps

This is where your smaller balloons come in.

Once the main garland is assembled, you’ll probably notice small gaps where the decorating strip shows.

Use small balloons to fill those spaces.

Balloon glue dots can help you attach smaller balloons to other balloons.

You don’t necessarily need to glue every balloon in your garland.

Use them strategically where you need extra fullness or want to disguise a gap.

🪩 Step 8: Add Something Special

Your garland can stop right there.

Or you can add a few details that connect it to your theme.

Try:

🌿 Artificial greenery for Boho styling

The key word here is a few.

You don’t need to attach every decoration you own.

How you hang your garland will depend on its size, weight and the surface you’re attaching it to.

Use attachment products appropriate for the wall or surface, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

If you’re using removable hooks, check their weight limits and surface recommendations.

Never assume a product is suitable for painted walls simply because it says “removable”.

And avoid attaching balloons near:

Once it’s secure, stand back and check the overall shape.

👀 Step 10: Make Your Final Adjustments

This is the fun bit.

Look at the garland from across the room rather than standing 20cm away from it.

Is there an obvious gap?

Does one colour dominate one area?

Would another small balloon make that section look fuller?

Does the shape work with the cake table or backdrop?

Make a few final adjustments and then…

STOP.

⏰ When Should You Make Your Balloon Garland?

You don’t necessarily need to leave the entire project until the morning of the party.

Air-filled latex balloons generally last much longer than helium-filled balloons because they aren’t relying on helium to float.

Many parents choose to prepare their balloon garland ahead of the event and keep it somewhere cool, dry and protected.

Keep balloons away from:

This depends enormously on:

• How full you want it
• Whether you’re creating a simple garland or large installation

Rather than focusing only on a particular balloon count, think about the size of the area you’re decorating.

For a DIY birthday setup, you don’t necessarily need an enormous wall-to-wall installation.

A smaller garland positioned strategically around the cake table or photo area can create just as much impact.

💰 You Don’t Need Balloons Everywhere

One of the easiest mistakes to make is thinking:

“If one balloon garland looks good, imagine what THREE will look like!”

Before you know it, the balloon budget is competing with the birthday cake.
