Capturing the Magic: How to Create a Fun DIY Photo Booth for a Kids’ Sleepover

One of the best things about a sleepover?
The photos.
The perfectly posed ones are lovely…
But it’s usually the silly ones โ matching pyjamas, crazy poses, huge smiles and a group of friends squeezed into one photo โ that become the favourites.
A DIY photo booth is an easy way to add another activity to your child’s sleepover while capturing some of those memories along the way.
And the good news?
You don’t need an actual photo booth.
A small space, a simple backdrop, some fun props and a phone can be more than enough.
Here’s how to create one.
๐ธ 1. Choose the Right Spot
Before buying anything, decide where your photo area will go.
Look for somewhere with:
โข Enough room for several kids to stand together
โข Good lighting
โข A relatively uncluttered background
โข Space that isn’t in the middle of a busy walkway
A blank wall can be perfect.
You could also use a corner near the sleepover setup so your beautifully styled teepees, Cabana or Bell Tent become part of the background.
Sometimes the party itself provides the best backdrop.
๐จ 2. Match It to the Sleepover Theme
If you’ve already chosen a sleepover theme, use that as your starting point.
For example:
๐ธ Boho: white, blush, flowers and soft textures
๐ Pretty in Pink: pink backdrop, hearts and sparkle
โฝ Soccer: team colours, soccer props and jerseys
๐ฎ Gaming: black, blue, green and neon accents

You don’t need to create an entirely separate theme for the photo area.
Repeat a few colours and details from the sleepover and everything will feel connected.
๐ 3. Create a Simple Backdrop
This can be as easy or elaborate as you want.
Try:

๐ Streamers
๐ชฉ Metallic fringe curtain
๐ธ Artificial flowers

๐จ A plain coloured backdrop
๐ A birthday sign
๐ข Large birthday number
If you’ve already created a beautiful cake table or balloon feature, consider using that area rather than decorating another part of the house.
One beautiful focal point can do several jobs.
๐ 4. Add a DIY Balloon Garland
A balloon garland can make an inexpensive photo area look much more impressive.
Choose colours that match the sleepover and position the garland along one side or across the top of your backdrop.
It doesn’t need to fill the entire wall.
A smaller garland strategically placed around the photo area can create plenty of impact.

This is where the kids can get silly.
Put a basket beside the photo area filled with props such as:

You don’t need 50 props.
A handful of things the kids will actually use is plenty.
You could even ask your child to help choose them before the party.

This is an easy pre-party craft project.
Create signs saying things like:

Besties
Sleepover Crew
Birthday Vibes
Too Cool for Bedtime
Team No Sleep
Best Night Ever
Or personalise one with the birthday child’s name and age.
Print them on thicker paper or cardboard and attach handles if you’d like the kids to hold them in the photos.
๐ฑ 7. You Don’t Need a Fancy Camera
A smartphone will do the job perfectly well for most families.
Make sure:

๐พ You have enough storage
๐ธ The camera lens is clean
๐ก There’s enough light
That last one sounds ridiculously simple, but cleaning the phone camera lens before taking party photos can make a surprisingly big difference!
A small phone tripod can also be useful if you want everyone โ including the photographer โ in the group photo.
๐ก 8. Think About the Lighting
Lighting can make more difference to your photos than an expensive backdrop.
If you’re taking photos during daylight, position the children facing towards natural light rather than having a bright window directly behind them.
At night, make sure faces are well lit.
Fairy lights look beautiful in the background, but they may not provide enough light on their own for clear photos.
Take a couple of test photos before the party starts and adjust things if necessary.
๐คฉ 9. Have Some Pose Ideas Ready
Some kids will jump in front of the camera immediately.
Others will stand there and ask:

Have a few easy prompts ready:

Do this earlier rather than later.
Don’t wait until:
One child is asleep.
Another is in their pyjamas with toothpaste down their shirt.
Someone has lost a sock.
And the birthday child has decided they no longer want photos. ๐
Once everyone has arrived and settled in, gather the group and get a few photos.
Take:

๐๏ธ 11. Don’t Forget Photos in the Sleepover Setup
Your designated photo booth isn’t the only place to take pictures.
Some of the loveliest sleepover photos are of the children sitting together amongst the teepees or underneath the Cabana.
For a Bell Tent party, get some photos before the sun completely disappears so you capture both the kids and the tent clearly.
Take a few posed photos…
Then put the camera down and let the party happen.

If you already own or can borrow an instant camera or portable photo printer, this can be a really fun addition.
Let each guest choose a favourite photo to take home.
You could add:

๐จ A decorated photo sleeve
โจ The birthday child’s name and party date
Suddenly the photo becomes a meaningful little party favour.
But don’t feel you need to buy a printer just for the party.
Digital photos are perfectly fine too.
๐จ 13. Turn Photo Frames Into an Activity
Want to extend the idea?
Give each guest a plain cardboard photo frame to decorate.
Provide:

They can decorate their frame during the party and add a printed group photo later.
It’s an activity and a keepsake in one.
๐ 14. Try a Before & After Photo
This can be hilarious.
Take a group photo when everyone arrives.
Then take another one the next morning.
5:00pm: Hair done. Matching pyjamas. Everyone smiling beautifully.
8:00am: Blankets everywhere. Hair going in twelve directions. Someone eating leftover popcorn for breakfast.
Those might end up being your favourite photos from the entire party. ๐
๐ 15. Think About Photo Privacy
This is one area I’d encourage parents to think about before the sleepover rather than afterwards.
Just because you’re comfortable sharing photos of your own child doesn’t mean every parent feels the same way.
Before posting group photos online or on social media, make sure you know whether the other parents are comfortable with their child appearing.
And for older kids and tweens, it’s worth having a quick conversation about photos too.
Remind them:
โข Ask before taking embarrassing photos
โข Don’t photograph friends getting changed
โข Don’t take photos of someone sleeping without their knowledge
โข Don’t post photos or videos of friends without permission
โข Respect someone who says they don’t want to be photographed
A sleepover should feel like a safe space for everyone.
๐ต 16. Don’t Let the Photo Booth Become the Whole Party
The purpose of the photo area is to capture the fun, not create a three-hour photoshoot.
Use it when everyone arrives.
Come back to it after dinner.
Take a few silly photos.
Get the group shot.
Then move on.
The kids don’t need to spend the entire night creating content.
Some of the best memories happen when nobody is thinking about a camera at all.

A great sleepover photo booth could literally be:

That’s enough.
You don’t need:
A professional camera.
An elaborate set.
Fifty props.
