Choosing a movie for kids aged around 8–12 isn’t always as easy as it sounds.
At this age, many kids have moved beyond younger children’s movies but aren’t necessarily ready for everything aimed at teenagers. Add several friends with different tastes into the mix and choosing one movie everyone agrees on can become an activity in itself!
So we’ve put together some movie-night inspiration for your next sleepover, with newer favourites, animation, adventure, musicals and some classics that are still great fun today.
🎤 1. KPop Demon Hunters
If there’s one movie that’s earned itself a place on plenty of kids’ playlists, it’s KPop Demon Hunters.
Combining music, friendship, action, humour and supernatural adventure, it’s an easy choice for groups who love music and K-pop.
And when the movie finishes?
Put the soundtrack on and turn the sleepover into karaoke!
Great for: Music lovers, K-pop fans and groups who enjoy fantasy and action.
Parent note: It is rated PG in Australia and contains fantasy themes, animated violence and some scary scenes, so consider whether it suits all the children attending.
⛏️ 2. A Minecraft Movie
For a group of Minecraft fans, this is an obvious contender.
It’s colourful, silly and packed with references kids who know the game will recognise.
You could even carry the theme through the night with Minecraft snacks, decorations or a gaming session before the movie.
Great for: Gamers, adventure lovers and Minecraft fans.
Parent note: Rated PG in Australia, with mild fantasy violence and coarse language, and some scenes may scare younger children.
🐉 3. How to Train Your Dragon
The live-action How to Train Your Dragon brings Hiccup and Toothless back to the screen for another generation.
It has adventure, friendship, dragons, and plenty of heart, making it a good option for a mixed group.
And if everyone loves it, there’s always the original animated movie to watch another time.
Great for: Adventure lovers, animal lovers and fantasy fans.
Parent note: The 2025 live-action version is rated PG in Australia for mild peril and violence, with some scenes that may upset younger children.
🌺 4. Lilo & Stitch
The live-action Lilo & Stitch brings back the story of Lilo and her mischievous alien friend Stitch.
At its heart, it’s a story about family, friendship and belonging, with plenty of humour along the way.
Great for: Groups wanting something funny, sweet and adventurous.
Parent note: The 2025 film is rated PG in Australia for mild themes and violence, with some scenes that may upset younger children.
🧠 5. Inside Out 2
This is a particularly lovely choice for tweens.
As Riley grows older, new emotions arrive — including Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy and Ennui — alongside Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust.
There’s plenty for kids to laugh at while also exploring feelings and friendships that become increasingly familiar as they approach their teenage years.
Great for: Tweens, friendship groups and families.
🍫 6. Wonka
Colourful, imaginative and filled with music, Wonka is a lovely choice if you’re looking for something whimsical.
It’s especially fun for a sleepover because it gives you the perfect excuse for a chocolate-themed snack table!
Great for: Musical lovers, chocolate lovers and imaginative kids.
🍄 7. The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Bowser make this an easy crowd-pleaser, particularly for gaming fans.
It’s colourful, fast-moving and familiar without requiring everyone to be a serious Mario player.
Great for: Gamers and groups wanting something light and fun.
🌊 8. Moana & Moana 2
Adventure, humour, fantastic music and a strong lead make Moana a sleepover favourite.
You could choose the original or continue the adventure with Moana 2.
And there’s a very good chance everyone will end up singing along at some point.
Great for: Music lovers, Disney fans and adventure-loving kids.
🎩 9. Paddington & Paddington 2
Never underestimate Paddington!
These films are funny, warm and entertaining enough for both children and adults.
They’re particularly good if you have guests of slightly different ages because they have broad appeal without feeling too young.
Great for: Mixed-age groups and a relaxed movie night.
🧙 10. Harry Potter
For a magical sleepover, it’s hard to go past Harry Potter.
The earlier movies, in particular, work beautifully with a sleepover theme — fairy lights, cosy bedding, popcorn, and a little Hogwarts magic.
If your child and their friends are big fans, you could even turn the entire sleepover into a Harry Potter-inspired night.
Great for: Fantasy lovers and groups who enjoy longer movies.
Parent note: The series gets progressively darker, so don’t assume that because a child is comfortable with the first movie, they’ll necessarily be comfortable with the later films.
🎶 11. The Greatest Showman
If your group loves singing, this one can quickly turn from movie night into karaoke night.
With plenty of familiar songs and colourful musical numbers, The Greatest Showman remains a fun group choice.
Great for: Singers, dancers and musical-loving tweens.
🐼 12. Kung Fu Panda
Funny, action-packed and easy to watch, the Kung Fu Panda movies are great for groups that want comedy mixed with adventure.
Po is also proof that sometimes the most unlikely person can become the hero.
Great for: Comedy and action fans.
🍌 13. Despicable Me & Minions
Sometimes you don’t need a deep storyline.
Sometimes you need Minions.
The Despicable Me movies are easy, funny group viewing and work particularly well earlier in the evening when everyone is still talking, eating and settling into the sleepover.
Great for: Groups wanting something silly and light-hearted.
🏫 14. School of Rock
For older kids in this age group, School of Rock can be a fun throwback choice.
Music, comedy and a classroom full of kids forming a rock band make it particularly fun for a group that loves performing.
You could follow it with your own karaoke session.
Great for: Music-loving older kids and tweens.
🏠 15. Home Alone
Some movies just keep finding new generations of fans.
Home Alone is particularly fun around Christmas, but the ridiculous traps and comedy can make it entertaining at other times too.
Great for: A Christmas sleepover or kids who enjoy slapstick comedy.
👑 16. The Princess Diaries
Another older movie that still works beautifully for sleepovers.
A teenager discovering she’s actually a princess?
That’s exactly the sort of escapism movie nights were made for.
Great for: Older tweens, friendship groups and fans of feel-good movies.
🍿 How Do You Choose a Movie Everyone Will Enjoy?
This is actually more important than having the “perfect” movie list.
Before the sleepover, let the birthday child choose three suitable options.
Then when everyone arrives, have the guests vote.
It prevents half an hour of:
“What do you want to watch?”
“I don’t know.”
“What about this?”
“Nah.”
“Then YOU pick something!”

❤️ Consider ALL the Children Attending
Just like choosing whether a Bell Tent sleepover is suitable, don’t base the decision only on what your own child is comfortable watching.
One 10-year-old may absolutely love spooky movies.
Another 10-year-old might be lying awake thinking about that scary scene hours later.
Before choosing a movie, consider:
• The age of all guests
• The Australian classification
• Violence or scary scenes
• Language
• Mature themes
• Whether parents would be comfortable with their child watching it
If you’re unsure, check with parents beforehand.
It’s much easier than changing the movie halfway through the night because one guest is uncomfortable.
🌙 Start Fun and Finish Calm
If you’re planning more than one movie, think about the order.
A loud, exciting action movie immediately before bed probably isn’t going to encourage anyone to wind down!
Start with the energetic movie earlier in the evening.
Later, choose something familiar and calmer while the lights are dimmed and everyone settles into bed.
