Picnic Under the Stars: Add a Magical Picnic to Your Next Slumber Party
Updated September 2026
Imagine this…
A beautifully styled picnic.
Cushions scattered around a low table.
Fairy lights beginning to glow as the sun goes down.
Pizza, snacks and drinks waiting for everyone.
A group of friends laughing together.
And when dinner is finished?
The sleepover is only just beginning. β¨
Combining a picnic with a slumber party is a beautiful way to turn a birthday celebration into an entire experience.
The picnic becomes the perfect place for everyone to gather, eat and celebrate before moving on to games, movies and eventually the sleepover itself.
Here are some simple ways to make it work.
πΈ 1. Start the Celebration With a Picnic
Rather than thinking of the picnic as another activity you need to squeeze into the night, use it as the beginning of the party.
As guests arrive, they can settle around the picnic table, have something to eat and start chatting.
It creates a natural gathering place while everyone arrives and helps the party get started without needing an organised activity straight away.
π 2. Make the Most of Golden Hour
If you’re planning an outdoor picnic, late afternoon can be a beautiful time to start.
You still have daylight for eating and photos, but as the sun begins to set, fairy lights and lanterns can start creating that magical evening atmosphere.
And importantly, you’re not trying to serve dinner to a group of children in complete darkness!
π 3. Keep the Food Easy
A sleepover picnic doesn’t need an elaborate menu.
Choose food that’s easy for kids to eat while sitting around together.
Ideas include:
π Pizza
π₯ͺ Sandwiches or wraps
π Fruit platters
π§ Grazing-style snacks
π₯¨ Pretzels and crackers
π§ Cupcakes
πͺ Cookies
πΏ Popcorn
For older kids and tweens, you could also add a DIY mocktail station where they create their own drinks.
Keep dietary requirements and food allergies in mind when planning your menu.
β¨ 4. Match the Picnic to the Sleepover Theme
This is where combining the two parts of the party can look really beautiful.
Use similar colours and styling across both the picnic and sleepover.
For example:
πΈ Boho: neutrals, pinks and soft florals
π Pretty in Pink: blush, pink and white
π Rainbow: colourful cushions and accessories
β½ Soccer: team colours and themed details
πͺ© Disco: silver, pink, purple and sparkle
β Under the Stars: navy, silver, stars and fairy lights
The picnic and sleepover then feel like one complete celebration, not two separate setups.
π§Ί 5. Create a Comfortable Picnic Space
Comfort makes a big difference, especially if everyone will be sitting there for a while.
A styled picnic might include:
β’ Low tables
β’ Rugs
β’ Cushions
β’ Table decorations
β’ Plates and cups
β’ Fairy lights
β’ Themed accessories
It doesn’t need to be enormous.
The aim is simply to create a welcoming space where the kids can eat, talk and enjoy being together.
πΈ 6. Take Photos Before Dinner Gets Messy!
If you’ve created a beautiful picnic setup, take your photos early.
Trust us on this one!
Snap a few pictures of the birthday child and their friends while everything still looks fresh.
Once pizza, cupcakes, and a group of excited kids get involved, the table probably won’t look quite the same. π
π² 7. Move Into Games After Dinner
Once everyone has finished eating, clear the food away and let the next part of the party begin.
Depending on the age of the children, you could try:
β’ Scavenger hunts
β’ Friendship bracelets
β’ Karaoke
β’ Backyard games
β’ Glow-stick games
β’ DIY T-shirts
β’ Cupcake decorating
β’ Photo challenges
You can also have some of our FREE downloadable sleepover games ready to go.
But remember β you don’t need to organise every minute.
Give them plenty of time to simply hang out with their friends too.
π¦ 8. Add a Little After-Dark Adventure
Once the sun goes down, simple activities suddenly become much more exciting.
Try:
π¦ Torchlight scavenger hunt
β¨ Glow-stick games
β Stargazing
π€ Outdoor karaoke
πΈ Night-time photos
Keep activities age-appropriate and supervise children outdoors, particularly once it gets dark.
β 9. Spend Some Time Stargazing
Sometimes the simplest activity can be one of the nicest.
Spread out a blanket, turn off unnecessary lights and look up.
See who can spot:
β The Southern Cross
π The Moon
π°οΈ A satellite
β¨ The brightest star
Kids spend so much time surrounded by screens and entertainment that simply lying outside talking and looking at the sky can feel surprisingly special.
π¬ 10. Transition Into Movie Time
After an active evening, a movie is a great way to wind down.
Bring everyone into their sleepover setup, hand out the popcorn and let them settle into their beds.
If you’re not sure what to watch, our Great Movies for Kids Aged 8β12 and Choosing the Right Movies for a Slumber Party guides have plenty of ideas.
βΊ 11. Finish With a Bell Tent Sleepover
For older children and tweens, the natural extension of an outdoor picnic is a Bell Tent sleepover.
The kids can enjoy dinner and activities outside before moving into their beautifully styled tent for the night.
From our experience, children around age 10+ often really enjoy Bell Tent sleepovers.
However, think about every guest attending.
Some children may be nervous about sleeping outdoors, particularly if they haven’t stayed away from home before.
Make sure families know beforehand that the sleeping arrangements will be outside.
π 12. Or Bring the Sleepover Indoors
You don’t need to sleep outside just because you’ve had an outdoor picnic.
An evening could easily look like:
Outdoor picnic
β Backyard games
β Birthday cake
β Movie
β Indoor sleepover
Once the outdoor part of the party finishes, everyone can head inside to individual teepees or an indoor open-style cabana.
This can be a fantastic option for younger children or guests who aren’t comfortable sleeping outside.
π¦οΈ 13. Always Have a Wet-Weather Plan
If you’re planning anything outdoors in the Illawarra, have a Plan B!
Rain, wind or a sudden change in temperature can quickly alter your plans.
Think ahead about whether:
β’ The picnic can move undercover
β’ Food can be served inside
β’ Activities can move indoors
β’ Your sleepover setup is weather dependent
Having a backup plan means you’re not frantically checking the weather forecast every ten minutes on party day.
π¦ 14. Remember the Little Outdoor Details
A few practical things can make an outdoor celebration much more comfortable.
Depending on the time of year, think about:
β’ Insect protection
β’ Sunscreen earlier in the afternoon
β’ Warm layers as the temperature drops
β’ Outdoor lighting
β’ Easy access to the bathroom
β’ Keeping food covered
β’ Adult supervision
They’re not the glamorous parts of party planning β but they’re often the things that make the night run smoothly.
π 15. Don’t Over-Plan It
One of the nicest things about a picnic sleepover is that the environment does a lot of the work for you.
You don’t need:
5:00pm β Activity One
5:30pm β Activity Two
6:00pm β Activity Three…
Let the kids eat.
Let them talk.
Let them laugh.
Let them wander between activities.
Some of the best memories happen during the parts nobody planned.
β¨ A Beautiful Beginning to a Magical Night
A picnic can be more than a place to eat dinner.
It creates a gathering place.
A photo opportunity.
A chance to slow down and connect.
And a beautiful beginning to everything that follows.
At Slumber Wonderland, we create magical celebrations for families throughout Wollongong, the Illawarra and surrounding areas, including beautifully styled picnics and sleepover experiences.
Combine your picnic with individual indoor teepees, an indoor open-style cabana or a backyard Bell Tent to create a celebration that moves effortlessly from afternoon into evening and, eventually, bedtime.
Picnic first.
Sleepover next.
Memories all night long. β¨
