Pillow Fights & Midnight Giggles: 10 Things Kids Actually Love About Sleepovers
Updated September 2026
Ask a parent what makes a great sleepover and we might say:
A comfortable sleeping space.
Enough food.
Some organised activities.
A suitable movie.
Everyone eventually getting some sleep.
Ask the kids?
You’ll probably get a completely different answer. π
Because when you’re a child, the magic of a sleepover isn’t necessarily in the things the adults carefully planned.
It’s choosing where you’re sleeping.
Eating pizza in your pyjamas.
Laughing when you’re supposed to be quiet.
Talking long after the lights have gone out.
And waking up the next morning surrounded by your friends.
So forget the perfectly planned party schedule for a moment.
Here are 10 things kids actually love about sleepovers.
ποΈ 1. The Great Bed Selection
The guests arrive.
Bags are dropped.
Everyone sees the sleepover setup.
And suddenly choosing where to sleep becomes extremely serious business.
βI’m sleeping here!β
βCan I be next to you?β
βWho’s sleeping on the end?β
βWait! I want that one!β
With individual teepees, everyone gets their own little sleeping space while still being right beside their friends.
With a Cabana or Bell Tent, deciding who sleeps beside whom can become an event in itself.
Our advice?
If possible, let them work it out.
Unless negotiations start resembling an international peace summit. π
π 2. Eating Dinner in Their Pyjamas
There’s something about eating pizza in pyjamas that apparently makes it taste about 47% better.
Normal dinner?
Fine.
Pizza with your friends at a sleepover?
BEST. DINNER. EVER.
It doesn’t need to be elaborate either.
Some of the easiest sleepover foods are often the most popular:
π Pizza
π Hot dogs
π Burgers
π₯ͺ Simple platters
πΏ Popcorn
π§ Cupcakes
π¦ Ice cream
This is not necessarily the night to introduce the children to an exciting new quinoa salad.
Keep it simple.
Check everyone’s allergies and dietary requirements beforehand.
Then let them enjoy it.
π€ͺ 3. Being Completely Silly With Their Friends
Sleepovers seem to have a special ability to turn perfectly sensible children into complete goofballs.
There will be:
Ridiculous dancing.
Terrible singing.
Funny photos.
Made-up games.
Inside jokes.
Someone laughing so hard they can’t explain what they’re laughing about.
And possibly a performance you’re required to watch, even though nobody seems to know what it’s actually about.
This is part of the magic.
They aren’t trying to achieve anything.
They’re just having fun together.
π€ 4. The Completely Unplanned Concert
You might have carefully planned:
A craft.
A scavenger hunt.
Cupcake decorating.
Three games.
A movie.
But somebody puts on a song everyone loves…
And suddenly your lounge room has become a concert venue.
Hairbrush microphones appear.
Dance routines are invented.
Someone decides they’re the lead singer.
Someone else appoints themselves choreographer.
And your carefully planned 7:15pm activity is completely forgotten.
Let it be forgotten.
Sometimes the unplanned activity becomes the thing they remember most.
πΏ 5. Watching a Movie With Friends
They may have seen the movie before.
Possibly several times.
Doesn’t matter.
Watching it at a sleepover is different.
There are blankets.
Snacks.
Friends.
Commentary from someone who apparently needs to explain every scene.
And at least one child asking:
βWait…what just happened?β
…because they were talking through the previous ten minutes. π
Let the birthday child choose a shortlist beforehand, then have the group vote.
It saves 45 minutes of:
βI don’t mind. What do you want to watch?β
βI don’t care.β
βAnything except that.β
βNoooo, I’ve already seen that!β
If you need some inspiration, our Slumber Party Movie Guides have plenty of ideas for kids and tweens.
πΈ 6. Taking Ridiculous Photos
You might want one beautiful group photo.
They want:
A silly-face photo.
A pretend-sleeping photo.
A jumping photo.
A sunglasses photo.
A photo where nobody looks at the camera.
And seventeen photos you don’t understand.
Let them have some fun with it.
A simple photo area with fairy lights, balloons or a few props can be a great addition to the party.
But get your nice group photo early.
Trust me.
By the end of the night:
Hair has changed.
Pyjamas are crumpled.
Someone has lost a sock.
And there may be chocolate on somebody’s face.
Actually…
Get that photo too. π
π€« 7. The Conversations After Lights Out
This might be the most important part of the whole sleepover.
The movie is finished.
The lights are low.
Everyone is tucked into bed.
You’ve said:
βOkay guys, time to settle down now.β
You walk away.
Approximately seven seconds later…
The whispering begins.
And those conversations can cover absolutely anything.
School.
Friends.
Teachers.
Sport.
Embarrassing stories.
Who likes who.
Something funny that happened three years ago.
Whether aliens exist.
What everyone would do during a zombie apocalypse.
This is why you don’t need to organise every minute of a sleepover.
Sometimes kids just need time to talk.
π 8. Trying to Stay Awake ALL NIGHT
At some point, somebody will announce:
βWE’RE STAYING AWAKE ALL NIGHT!β
This statement is generally made with enormous confidence.
There may even be a plan.
Snacks.
Games.
Movies.
A proposed 3am activity.
Then…
One child falls asleep.
Another insists they’re definitely still awake while clearly sleeping.
And eventually the room becomes quiet.
Usually much later than the adults would have preferred. π
π΄ 9. Finding Out Who Falls Asleep First
Nobody wants to be first.
But someone has to be.
The child who announced at 7pm:
βI’m not even tired!β
…is often a strong contender.
There will also be someone who seems physically incapable of sleeping while another human being is awake.
And another child who can apparently sleep through:
Whispering.
Laughing.
A movie.
Someone dropping a water bottle.
And possibly a small earthquake.
Every sleepover group has one.
π 10. Waking Up Together the Next Morning
Parents may not consider 6:04am an appropriate time to start the day.
Children at a sleepover disagree. π
One wakes up.
Then another.
Then the whispering starts again.
Someone asks:
βAre you awake?β
Everyone is now awake.
And suddenly they’re ready for breakfast.
The morning after is part of the experience.
They talk about what happened the night before.
They laugh about who fell asleep first.
They eat breakfast together.
And before long, parents start arriving for pick-up.
Which leads to:
βCan they stay a little longer?β
π BONUS: Having a Story to Tell Afterwards
This might be the best part.
Days later they’ll still be saying:
βRemember when…β
Remember when we couldn’t stop laughing?
Remember when we made up that dance?
Remember when she fell asleep during the movie?
Remember what happened during the game?
Remember when we all tried to fit into one photo?
That’s how childhood memories are made.
Not necessarily through enormous events.
Through little moments shared with people they love being around.
π² And Notice What’s NOT on This List…
An hour-by-hour activity schedule.
Ten organised games.
Expensive party favours.
Elaborate entertainment.
A perfectly Pinterest-worthy dessert table.
Kids don’t need every minute filled.
Absolutely have a few activities ready.
A craft.
Some games.
A movie.
Maybe a scavenger hunt.
But leave space for nothing.
Because βnothingβ is often where:
The conversations happen.
The ridiculous games are invented.
The music gets turned up.
The giggling starts.
And the memories are made.
βΊ The Sleeping Space Is Part of the Adventure
Of course, where they’re sleeping adds another layer of excitement.
For some children, nothing beats walking into a room and discovering their own beautifully styled teepee.
For older kids and tweens, sleeping together beneath an indoor Cabana can feel a little more grown-up.
And for kids around 10+ who are comfortable sleeping outdoors, a Bell Tent in the backyard can turn the sleepover into a whole adventure.
But whichever option you choose, something interesting happens once all the guests arrive.
The beautiful setup becomes messy.
The cushions move.
Blankets get rearranged.
Water bottles appear.
Someone’s pyjamas land somewhere they shouldn’t.
And that’s okay.
Because it’s no longer just a styled sleepover.
It’s their sleepover.
β¨ The Magic Isn’t Really in the Teepees
At Slumber Wonderland, we absolutely love creating that magical first impression.
The beautifully styled beds.
The fairy lights.
The cushions.
The little details.
That moment when the birthday child sees everything ready for the first time.
But the real magic comes afterwards.
When the friends arrive.
When the pizza boxes open.
When the music starts.
When everyone gets into their pyjamas.
When the laughing begins.
Because we can create the Wonderland…
but the kids create the memories.
Slumber Wonderland creates beautifully styled sleepover experiences for families throughout Wollongong, the Illawarra and surrounding areas, including individual indoor teepees, indoor open-style Cabanas and backyard Bell Tents.
And whatever style they choose, one thing is almost guaranteed:
There will be giggles after lights out. π
