Stay Up Late! Fun Slumber Party Ideas Kids & Tweens Will Love
Updated September 2026
There is something about a sleepover that makes ordinary things suddenly feel exciting.
Pizza?
Better in pyjamas.
A movie?
Better with five friends squeezed together under blankets.
Talking?
Apparently much more interesting after 10pm.
And bedtime?
Highly negotiable. ๐
For kids and tweens, a sleepover isn’t really about sleeping.
It’s about having uninterrupted time with their friends.
Talking.
Laughing.
Eating.
Playing games.
Watching movies.
Taking ridiculous photos.
And attempting to stay awake much later than they normally would.
So if you’re planning your child’s next sleepover, here are some fun ideas for the theme, activities, food and evening โ without feeling like you need to schedule every minute.
๐ FUN SLEEPOVER THEME IDEAS
A theme can make planning easier, but don’t feel everything has to match.
You don’t need themed food, themed games, themed pyjamas and a themed toothbrush.
Sometimes the sleeping setup and colours create the theme โ and the kids take it from there.
๐ธ 1. Boho Sleepover
A Boho sleepover creates a soft, dreamy atmosphere that’s perfect for a relaxed night with friends.
Think:
๐ค White lace-style teepees
โจ Fairy lights
๐ธ Soft colours
โ๏ธ Fluffy textures
๐๏ธ Cushions and cosy bedding
๐ฎ Lanterns
Add some bracelet making, a movie and a playlist and you’ve got a beautiful night without needing dozens of organised activities.
๐ 2. Pretty in Pink
For the child who believes there’s no such thing as too much pink…
This one’s for them.
Use different shades of pink throughout the sleeping space and add:
๐ Cushions
โจ Fairy lights
๐ Cute accessories
๐ญ Sweet treats
๐ A simple pamper activity
๐ธ A photo area
And, of course, pink pyjamas are always welcome.
โฝ 3. Soccer Sleepover
Perfect for your football-mad child.
You could include:
โฝ Soccer-themed sleeping setup
๐ฅ A backyard penalty shootout before dark
๐ Mini challenges
๐ฌ A sports movie
โ Soccer trivia
๐ธ Team photos
๐ Pizza after the โmatchโ
And if they’re older and comfortable outdoors, a backyard Bell Tent can make it feel like their team’s very own overnight camp.
๐ฎ 4. Gaming Night
For some kids, the ultimate sleepover activity is very simple:
Play games with my friends.
Set up multiplayer games everyone can join and perhaps add a small tournament.
The important part is making gaming a shared activity, rather than having six children sitting silently on six separate devices.
Then break things up with dinner, snacks, a movie or an old-fashioned party game.
๐ชฉ 5. Disco & Karaoke Night
Create a playlist.
Turn down the lights.
Add some glow accessories.
Hand over the microphone.
Then prepare yourself.
๐
Kids can spend an extraordinary amount of time:
๐ค Singing
๐ Dancing
๐ถ Requesting songs
๐ญ Creating performances
๐น Making music videos
You can use our Ultimate Slumber Party Playlist for song inspiration too.
๐ฌ 6. Movie Night
Movie nights are sleepover classics for a reason.
Let your child choose a shortlist of two or three appropriate movies before the party.
Then let the guests vote.
Add:
๐ฟ Popcorn
๐ซ Movie snacks
๐๏ธ Blankets
โจ Fairy lights
๐ฅค Drinks
The trick?
Don’t offer 27 movie choices.
Otherwise choosing the movie may take longer than watching it.
๐ญ 7. Sweet Treats Sleepover
Perfect for kids who love all things colourful and fun.
Think:
๐ฌ Lollies
๐ฉ Donuts
๐ง Cupcakes
๐ฆ Ice cream
๐ซ Chocolates
You don’t need to provide everything at once!
Instead, make one sweet treat part of the evening activity โ such as decorating cupcakes or creating ice cream sundaes.
๐ 8. Under the Stars
For older children and tweens who are comfortable sleeping outdoors, an Under the Stars theme can be magical.
Start the evening with:
๐ Dinner or a picnic outside
๐ฒ Backyard games
๐ฆ A torch scavenger hunt
โจ Stargazing
๐ธ Sunset photos
Then everyone can settle into a backyard Bell Tent for the night.
From our experience at Slumber Wonderland, children around 10+ often enjoy Bell Tent sleepovers, but every child is different.
Consider all the guests โ not just the birthday child โ before choosing an outdoor sleepover.
๐ค 9. Tween Cabana Night
What happens when your child says:
โI’m too old for teepees.โ
Firstly…
Excuse me?! ๐ญ
Secondly…
An indoor Cabana can be a fantastic next step.
The beds sit together beneath one open-style tent, giving older kids and tweens a shared sleepover space that feels a little more grown-up while still creating that special sleepover atmosphere.
Add:
๐ฌ Movies
๐ค Music
๐ฅค Mocktails
๐ธ Photos
๐ Pizza
๐ฌ And plenty of time to talk.
Sometimes that’s all tweens actually want.
๐จ FUN SLEEPOVER ACTIVITIES
Once you’ve chosen the overall feel of the party, have a few activities available.
Notice I said a few.
Not 14.
Here are some easy favourites.
๐ง 10. Cupcake Decorating
Give everyone:
A cupcake.
Icing.
Sprinkles.
A selection of decorations.
Then let them create.
You can even have funny categories such as:
๐ Most Colourful
๐ Funniest Creation
โจ Most Creative
๐ Most Sprinkles Humanly Possible
Check allergies and dietary requirements beforehand, particularly when children are sharing ingredients and decorating supplies.
๐ 11. Make Your Own Pizza
Dinner and activity in one.
Perfect.
Use pizza bases and let everyone choose their toppings.
Set out options such as:
๐ Sauce
๐ง Cheese
๐ Pineapple
๐ Mushrooms
๐ซ Capsicum
๐ฅ Appropriate meat toppings
Again, check allergies and dietary requirements first.
Then the kids get to eat their creations.
๐ธ 12. Create a Sleepover Photo Challenge
Instead of simply telling everyone:
โGo take photos.โ
give them some prompts.
For example:
๐ธ Funniest group photo
๐ธ Everyone jumping
๐ธ Best pyjama pose
๐ธ Movie-star photo
๐ธ Sleepover setup photo
๐ธ Recreate an album cover
๐ธ Serious photo where nobody is allowed to laugh
Get your lovely group photo earlier in the evening before everyone becomes progressively more sleepover-looking. ๐
And remind children to ask before photographing or posting their friends.
๐จ 13. Decorate Pillowcases
Give each guest a plain pillowcase and fabric markers.
They can add:
Names.
Quotes.
Patterns.
Pictures.
Inside jokes.
Messages from friends.
Place cardboard inside each pillowcase while decorating so the colours don’t transfer through the fabric.
Follow the instructions for the fabric markers or paint regarding drying and heat-setting.
Then everyone has something to take home.
๐ 14. Bracelet or Friendship Charm Station
This works particularly well because the kids can craft and talk at the same time.
Set out:
Beads.
Elastic.
Letter beads.
Charms.
Containers for supplies.
Then let them create bracelets for themselves or each other.
For younger children, choose age-appropriate materials and supervise small parts.
๐ด 15. Decorate Sleep Masks
Plain sleep masks can become a fun personalised activity.
Depending on the materials and children’s ages, they could add:
Names.
Fabric decorations.
Appropriate stick-on embellishments.
Initials.
Simple designs.
The finished sleep mask can then double as a party favour.
๐ 16. Have a Scavenger Hunt
Create clues around:
๐ The house
๐ณ Backyard
โบ Sleepover area
Older kids might enjoy a torch scavenger hunt outside before bedtime.
You can make it themed or keep it incredibly simple.
The final clue could lead to:
The movie snacks.
Dessert.
Party bags.
Or a little surprise.
๐ฒ 17. Bring Back Old-School Sleepover Games
You don’t need expensive entertainment.
Try:
Charades.
Who Am I?
Wink Murder.
Chinese Whispers.
Would You Rather?
Musical Statues.
Minute-to-Win-It challenges.
Create-a-Story.
Sometimes the games parents remember playing are exactly the ones kids find hilarious.
We also have free downloadable sleepover games available through Slumber Wonderland that you can have ready as an easy backup.
๐ค 18. Karaoke
You don’t necessarily need a karaoke machine.
A screen, appropriate karaoke tracks and something vaguely resembling a microphone can be enough.
And don’t underestimate the entertainment value of the adults joining in.
Depending on the adult.
๐
๐ฎ 19. Have a Gaming Tournament
For gaming-loving kids and tweens, turn it into something social.
Choose games where friends can play together or take turns.
You could create a simple tournament or team challenge.
Just remember:
The aim is for everyone to have fun.
This is a birthday party, not the World Championships.
๐ฟ 20. Movie Time
Once everyone has eaten, played, sung and laughed…
A movie is the perfect way to start winding things down.
Create a cosy viewing area.
Bring out the popcorn.
Lower the lights.
Then enjoy the relative silence while it lasts.
๐ EASY SLEEPOVER FOOD IDEAS
Sleepover food does not need to be complicated.
In fact, some of the easiest food is often the most popular.
๐ Pizza
A sleepover classic.
Order it.
Make it.
Let the kids build their own.
All work.
๐ฎ Build-Your-Own Dinner
Depending on the group, you could create:
๐ฎ Tacos
๐ฏ Wraps
๐ Burgers
๐ฅช Sandwiches
Letting children choose their own fillings can make dinner part of the fun.
๐ง Decorate-Your-Own Dessert
Try:
Cupcakes.
Cookies.
Donuts.
Ice cream sundaes.
A dessert activity gives them something to do and something to eat.
That’s efficient party planning.
๐ฟ Movie Snacks
Popcorn.
Fruit.
Pretzels.
Chips.
A few sweets.
You don’t need an entire supermarket aisle.
A small selection is plenty.
๐ฅค Create a Drinks Station
Have water readily available throughout the night.
You can also create a simple drinks station with age-appropriate options.
For tweens, fun cups, fruit and colourful garnishes can turn ordinary drinks into a little โmocktail barโ.
๐ฅฃ Don’t Forget Breakfast
There will eventually be morning.
Even though at midnight it may not feel that way.
๐
Keep breakfast simple:
๐ฅฃ Cereal
๐ Toast
๐ Fruit
๐ฅ Croissants
๐ง Waffles
๐ฅ Pancakes
And water.
Lots of water.
๐ ADD A SMALL PARTY FAVOUR
You don’t need huge party bags after a sleepover.
Something useful or personal can be much more memorable.
Ideas include:
๐ด A sleep mask
๐งฆ Cosy socks
๐ The bracelet they made
๐จ Their decorated pillowcase
๐ธ A printed group photo
๐ซ A personalised chocolate
๐ชฅ A small overnight toiletry set
Slumber Wonderland also offers personalised cosmetic packs, including a personalised cosmetic bag, personalised eye mask and toothbrush.
It’s a practical little sleepover keepsake guests can use again.
โฐ SHOULD KIDS ACTUALLY STAY UP ALL NIGHT?
Your child may announce:
โWE’RE NOT SLEEPING AT ALL!โ
At 5pm.
Confidence is high.
๐
You don’t necessarily need to enforce their normal school-night bedtime, but encouraging some wind-down is sensible.
Move from:
๐ค Karaoke
โ
๐ฒ Games
โ
๐ฟ Movie
โ
๐ชฅ Teeth
โ
๐ฌ Talking
โ
๐ Lights down
Will they immediately fall asleep?
Unlikely.
But at least everyone is moving in roughly the right direction.
๐ THE BEST SLEEPOVER ACTIVITY MIGHT BE…NOTHING
This is something I come back to again and again.
Don’t plan every minute.
You might have organised:
A craft.
Three games.
A scavenger hunt.
Karaoke.
A photo challenge.
And a movie.
Then discover the kids spend 90 minutes lying on their beds talking and laughing.
Let them.
They’re not bored.
They’re enjoying the reason they came.
Their friends.
Have activities ready when you need them.
But leave space for the night to happen naturally.
โจ CREATE THE SETTING โ THEN LET THE KIDS CREATE THE FUN
You don’t need an enormous entertainment schedule to create an unforgettable sleepover.
Choose:
A sleepover style your child loves.
A few activities.
Easy food.
A movie.
Some music.
And their favourite people.
At Slumber Wonderland, we create beautifully styled sleepover experiences throughout Wollongong, the Illawarra and surrounding areas.
Choose from:
โบ Individual indoor teepees
๐ค Indoor open-style Cabanas
๐ Backyard Bell Tents
We take care of the setup and pack-down, so you can concentrate on the rest of the celebration.
We’ll create the Wonderland.
The kids will create the memories.
โจ Slumber Wonderland โ Where giggles, whispers and imagination come to play!
