Tween Sleepover Ideas They’ll Actually Think Are Cool

Updated September 2026

Planning a birthday for a tween can be tricky.

They’re reaching that stage where some traditional kids’ party ideas are suddenly “too babyish” — but they still want to have fun, be silly and celebrate with their friends.

For many kids around 9–12 years old, a sleepover can be the perfect answer.

It feels a little more grown-up, gives them plenty of time with their friends and, best of all, you don’t need to schedule every minute of the night.

If you’re planning a tween sleepover, here are some ideas that strike the balance between fun, cool and easy to organise.

⛺ 1. Have a Bell Tent Sleepover

For tweens who love a little adventure, a backyard Bell Tent can make their birthday feel completely different from a normal night at home.

Fill it with comfortable beds, cushions, fairy lights and themed styling and suddenly the backyard becomes their own private party space.

From our experience at Slumber Wonderland, around age 10+ is often when kids really start to enjoy Bell Tent sleepovers.

But age isn’t the only thing to consider.

Think about all the children attending — not just the birthday child.

Some guests may never have slept away from home before, and others may feel nervous about sleeping outdoors once it gets dark.

If you’re unsure, an indoor sleepover can be just as special.

✨ 2. Try an Indoor Cabana Sleepover

If individual teepees aren’t quite the look your tween wants, an indoor open-style cabana is a fantastic alternative.

Everyone sleeps together under one beautifully styled space, giving it a more relaxed, slightly older feel.

It’s also ideal when you don’t have suitable outdoor space for a Bell Tent or would prefer to keep everyone indoors.

For tweens who think they might have “outgrown” individual teepees but definitely haven’t outgrown sleepovers, a cabana can be the perfect middle ground.

🎬 3. Create the Ultimate Movie Night

Let the birthday child choose a shortlist of movies and have the group vote for the winner.

Add:

🍿 Popcorn
🍫 Chocolate
🍬 Lollies
🥤 Drinks
🛏️ Blankets and cushions

Then dim the lights and let everyone settle in.

Don’t feel like you need to plan a three-movie marathon either.

One great movie, good snacks and a room full of friends can be more than enough.

🎤 4. Set Up Karaoke

You don’t need a professional karaoke machine.

A microphone, speaker and lyric videos can be enough to get everyone singing.

Let the kids choose songs, perform in groups or have a lip-sync battle if some guests aren’t comfortable singing.

And yes — the parents may eventually be asked to leave the room!

🎶 5. Let Them Create the Party Playlist

Tweens usually have very definite opinions about music.

Use that to your advantage.

Ask the birthday child to create a playlist before the party or let guests contribute a few favourite songs.

You can also check out our Ultimate Slumber Party Playlist for ideas.

Just remember to check lyrics and choose clean versions where necessary.

🥤 6. Make a DIY Mocktail Bar

Give them plastic cups, straws, fruit and a few colourful drinks and let everyone create their own concoction.

You could add little menu cards with fun names or let each guest invent a signature drink.

It’s simple but feels surprisingly grown-up — which is exactly why tweens tend to love it.

📿 7. Make Friendship Bracelets or Phone Charms

Set out beads, letters, charms and elastic and let everyone create something.

They can make:

• Friendship bracelets
• Bag charms
• Keyrings
• Phone charms
• Matching pieces for the whole group

It’s a lovely quieter activity because the kids naturally chat while they’re creating.

And everyone gets something to take home.

📸 8. Create a DIY Photo Booth

Pick a wall, add a simple backdrop and let the kids take their own photos throughout the night.

You could use:

✨ Fairy lights
🪩 Tinsel curtains
🎈 Balloons
🕶️ Props
💬 Funny signs

For older tweens, don’t overdo the props.

Sometimes a great backdrop and their own poses are all they want.

🍕 9. Let Them Make Their Own Pizzas

Dinner can become an activity.

Set out pizza bases and bowls of toppings, then let everyone make their own.

It solves the “I don’t like that topping” problem and gives the kids something to do while you prepare dinner.

🧁 10. Have a Dessert Challenge

Cupcakes, cookies or ice cream can become another easy activity.

Set out toppings and let the kids create their masterpieces.

You could have fun categories such as:

🏆 Most Creative
🌈 Most Colourful
😂 Funniest Creation
✨ Best Presentation

Or forget the judging altogether and just let them eat the results!

🪩 11. Have a Glow Party

Turn down the lights and bring out:

• Glow sticks
• Glow bracelets
• Neon accessories
• Music
• Disco lights

This works particularly well as an energetic activity earlier in the evening before transitioning into movies and quieter activities.

🎮 12. Hold a Gaming Tournament

For gaming-loving tweens, sometimes the easiest party activity is already sitting in your house.

Choose multiplayer games, create a friendly tournament and rotate players so everyone gets involved.

Keep it social rather than having everyone disappear onto separate devices.

👕 13. Decorate T-Shirts

Plain T-shirts and fabric markers can become a great sleepover activity.

Kids can create their own designs or everyone can add one small matching element representing the birthday celebration.

The finished shirts then become the party favour.

We’ve got a full DIY T-Shirt Sleepover Activity guide on the Slumber Wonderland blog if you’d like more ideas.

🎲 14. Have Some Games Ready — Just in Case

You don’t need to plan games for every hour of the sleepover.

But it’s useful to have a few up your sleeve.

Slumber Wonderland has FREE downloadable sleepover games that you can print before the party and bring out whenever the group needs something new to do.

Think of them as your backup plan rather than your schedule.

🌙 15. Give Them Time to Just Hang Out

This might actually be the most important one.

Don’t plan every minute.

Tweens often enjoy the parts adults haven’t organised.

Sitting around talking.

Listening to music.

Taking ridiculous photos.

Laughing about something nobody else understands.

Eating snacks.

Talking when they’re supposed to be sleeping.

Those unplanned moments are often what they’ll remember most.

💙 Remember: Not Every Guest Will Be Ready to Sleep Over

At this age, some children may have had lots of sleepovers while others have never stayed away from home.

Try not to make staying overnight feel compulsory.

A guest who isn’t comfortable sleeping over could still join the afternoon and evening activities and be collected later.

For Bell Tent parties in particular, consider whether all the guests are comfortable sleeping outdoors.

Creating an environment where children know they can speak up if they’re uncomfortable can make the night more enjoyable for everyone.

✨ You Don’t Need to Make It Complicated

One of the biggest misconceptions about tween parties is that you need an enormous list of activities to keep everyone entertained.

You really don’t.

A fantastic tween sleepover could be as simple as:

A beautiful sleepover setup + pizza + music + one activity + a movie + snacks + friends.

That’s plenty.

Give them a comfortable space and enough freedom to enjoy being together.

🌟 Create Their Own Little Wonderland

At Slumber Wonderland, we create sleepover experiences that give tweens a special space to celebrate with their friends—while making things easier for parents by handling setup and pack-down.

Depending on your space and the type of celebration you’re planning, you can choose from individual indoor teepees, indoor open-style cabanas or backyard Bell Tents.

We create magical sleepover experiences for families throughout Wollongong, the Illawarra and surrounding areas.

Because they might be getting older…

but they’re definitely not too old to make magical memories with their friends.
