We might be a little biased, but we think Wollongong and the Illawarra is a pretty amazing place to raise kids.

We’ve got beaches on one side.

The escarpment on the other.

Playgrounds, bushwalks, wildlife, science, swimming, parks and plenty of places to explore in between.

So whether you’re a local wondering what to do this weekend, looking for school holiday inspiration or visiting Wollongong with the kids, here are some of our favourite ideas for a family day out.

🌿 1. Explore Wollongong Botanic Garden

Pack some snacks and spend a few hours exploring the beautiful Wollongong Botanic Garden in Keiraville.

There’s plenty of room for kids to explore while families can enjoy the gardens, open spaces and changing seasonal displays.

It’s also worth checking what’s on throughout the year, as the Garden hosts family and community activities.

Local tip: The much-loved red Kawasaki Bridge has been undergoing restoration during 2026, with the bridge returned to the Garden in September while surrounding improvements continue. Check current conditions before visiting if that’s something you’re hoping to see.

Great for: A relaxed family morning, nature lovers and a budget-friendly day out.

🔬 2. Get Curious at Science Space

If you’ve got a child who constantly asks “But WHY?”, this one’s for them.

Science Space at the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus in North Wollongong combines interactive science exhibits with live science experiences and planetarium shows.

It’s a fantastic option when you want something educational that doesn’t actually feel like education.

And because it’s indoors, keep this one in your back pocket for those rainy Illawarra days!

Great for: Curious kids, primary-school-aged children, space lovers and wet-weather days.

🧸 3. Play at Early Start Discovery Space

For younger children, the Early Start Discovery Space at the University of Wollongong is another wonderful local attraction.

It’s an interactive children’s museum designed around learning through play, with experiences that encourage children to explore, imagine, create and discover.

It’s particularly suited to younger families, with experiences designed for children from birth through to around 10 years old.

Great for: Babies, toddlers and primary-school-aged children.

🏖️ 4. Have a Wollongong Beach Day

Sometimes the best family activity costs absolutely nothing.

Pack:

…and head to the coast.

Wollongong has plenty of beautiful beaches to choose from, so whether the kids want to splash, build sandcastles or simply run themselves exhausted, a beach day is hard to beat.

Always check local conditions and swim between the flags at patrolled beaches.

🛝 5. Spend the Morning at Stuart Park

If you’re looking for somewhere the kids can burn off some energy, Stuart Park at North Wollongong is a fantastic family option.

Pack a picnic, let the kids play and enjoy being close to the coast at the same time.

It’s also an easy activity to combine with a walk or beach visit.

🦘 6. Meet the Animals at Symbio Wildlife Park

Just north of Wollongong at Helensburgh, Symbio Wildlife Park is a great day trip for animal-loving families.

Kids can discover Australian wildlife alongside animals from around the world, making it an easy choice when you want an outing that appeals to different ages.

Allow enough time to explore rather than trying to rush through.

Great for: Animal lovers and families wanting a full-day outing.

💦 7. Make a Splash at Jamberoo Action Park

When the weather warms up, Jamberoo Action Park is one of those Illawarra childhood experiences many locals know very well.

With water attractions ranging from family-friendly areas through to bigger thrills, it’s the sort of place where you can easily spend an entire day.

Pack the swimmers, sunscreen and towels and prepare for some very tired kids on the drive home!

Great for: Hot days, school holidays and families with kids who love water.

🌳 8. Walk Above the Trees at Illawarra Fly

Head up the escarpment towards Knights Hill and experience the forest from a completely different perspective at Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures.

Families can explore the treetop walk through the rainforest canopy, while those wanting more adventure can investigate the zipline experience.

Check age, height and booking requirements for individual activities before making the drive.

Great for: Adventurous families, nature lovers and older children.

🛕 9. Visit Nan Tien Temple

Wollongong is also home to the beautiful Nan Tien Temple at Berkeley.

A visit offers families an opportunity to experience somewhere peaceful and culturally significant that’s completely different from the usual playground or theme-park outing.

Take the opportunity to explore respectfully and talk with children about the culture, traditions and environment around them.

🎨 10. Explore Wollongong Art Gallery

Not every family outing needs to involve slides, rides or running around.

Wollongong Art Gallery is a great way to introduce children to visual art and creativity.

Check the current exhibition and program schedule before visiting, particularly during school holidays when family activities may be available.

🚶 11. Explore Wollongong Harbour & the Lighthouses

One of the simplest Wollongong outings is also one of the nicest.

Take a walk around the harbour and up towards Flagstaff Point.

Watch the boats.

See the lighthouses.

Look out over the ocean.

Take some family photos.

Then grab something to eat and enjoy the view.

It’s particularly lovely when you’re looking for something spontaneous rather than an entire planned day out.

Great for: All ages and visiting family or friends.

🌊 12. Explore the Rock Pools

Living on the coast gives Illawarra families access to some wonderful ocean pools and rock pools.

They’re a great alternative when kids want a swim but you’d prefer something different from a traditional beach day.

Conditions still matter, though, so check the weather, tides and local advice and supervise children closely around the ocean.

🥾 13. Go on a Family Bushwalk

One of the best things about Wollongong is how quickly you can go from coastline to bushland.

Choose a walk that suits the youngest person in the family rather than the most enthusiastic adult!

Pack water, wear appropriate shoes and turn it into an adventure.

You don’t need to walk kilometres for kids to feel like they’ve been exploring.

The Wollongong coastline is a beautiful place to get the family out on bikes or scooters.

Choose a manageable section, stop along the way and make the journey part of the activity rather than racing towards a destination.

Add a playground or ice cream stop and suddenly a bike ride becomes an entire morning out.

Pick a park, pack some food and go.

Seriously — sometimes that’s all you need.

A picnic can be as simple as sandwiches, fruit and a football.

🌊 16. Take a Day Trip to Kiama

Head south and you’ve got another beautiful family destination.

Visit the Kiama Blowhole, explore the harbour, walk along the coastline and grab something to eat.

Whether the Blowhole puts on an impressive show depends on the conditions — which is part of the fun!

Kiama is close enough to make an easy family day trip while still feeling like you’ve gone somewhere.

🏃 17. Let the Kids Choose the Adventure

Here’s an idea that costs nothing:

Give the kids three choices.

Beach, bushwalk or playground?

Let them vote.

Children don’t always need elaborate outings.

Sometimes simply having a say in what the family does makes an ordinary Saturday feel special.
